Averett Homecoming: a Celebration for All

2015_HomecomingAfter a hot, dry summer, fall is usually a much anticipated season. It’s a herald for things long awaited – cooler nights, all things pumpkin and football season. Fall also means the arrival of Homecoming – which combines two of Averett’s favorite things our people (alumni, family and friends) and football. We will celebrate Homecoming Oct. 2-4 and this year’s theme is “Something Old, Something New, Something Gold, Something Blue.”

On Friday, Oct. 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the university will host its annual Homecoming Hometown Party at the Danville Community Market. Tickets are $25 per person and include a steak dinner courtesy of Poogie’s Chicken & BBQ and beverages from Lawrence Distributing. This year’s band is Smoke ‘n Guns featuring Pittsylvania County native and Averett alumna Lindsay Bowman ’07. Those interested in skipping the dinner can get in for $15 after 8 p.m. Tickets for the dinner must be purchased in advance by visiting www.averett.edu/homecoming. Attendees must be 21 or older.

For families, there is movie night on the lawn of the Student Center. The movie, “Minions,” begins at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Festivities at the North Campus will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 with a pregame tailgate party. Tailgate Alley has become a special part of Homecoming and the university encourages those who want to tailgate together to arrive together because spots will not be reserved. When the parking lot at the North Campus fills up, there will be a shuttle bus from the Danville Mall. The shuttle bus will pick up and drop off people at the main mall entrance under the large marquee sign.

Gates and concessions (Chick-fil-A sandwiches and Domino’s Pizza) will open at 3:30 p.m. The Cougars will kick off at 5 p.m. against the LaGrange College Panthers. Tickets for the game are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and 12 and under are free. Attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food to support Cans Across the Conference and God’s Storehouse. During halftime, the Homecoming Court and this year’s alumni award recipients and Athletics Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized.

Festivities will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 4. At 10 a.m., we will hold our annual Service of Remembrance in Blount Chapel. This special chapel service honors members of the Averett community who passed away in the last year. Following the chapel service brunch will be served in the dining hall in the Student Center from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (Dutch treat).
