Junior Leadership Southside is a one-week, immersive program that provides leadership orientation and development to local high school juniors and seniors. Sessions include speakers and activities that provide a holistic approach to leadership orientation and development. The program was originally brought to fruition as a project for the 2007-2008 class of Leadership Southside. The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors agreed to house and coordinate the program during its initial phases of growth. The CCECC took it on last year, and MBF will join them this year.

“Middle Border Forward is thrilled to partner with the CCECC to host this year’s class. A key component of our overall mission is the cultivation of inclusive leadership – which we believe includes youth leaders. Our hope is that by connecting students to local engagement opportunities, we will increase the likelihood that they return to serve the region after graduation,” said Jennifer Gregory, Middle Border Forward’s executive director.

MBF seeks to inspire community engagement and create equitable access to opportunities in the region. Its passion and expertise will create an even more meaningful experience for program participants.

After the first year of Junior Leadership Southside, Averett University announced that it would award a $5,000 renewable scholarship to every high school student who completes the Junior Leadership Southside Program and attends the University. The scholarship can be utilized for up to four years for a total award of $20,000.

“We want to recognize these students’ accomplishments and make it possible for these emerging leaders to remain here in our region,” said Averett President Dr. Tiffany Franks. “These students represent some of our area’s best and brightest talents. They are our future leaders.” Franks noted that scholarship recipients will continue their training at Averett through a comprehensive leadership development program available to all students.

“Averett will be a great fit for Junior Leadership graduates who wish to continue to hone their leadership skills through Averett’s numerous service and volunteerism opportunities, by leading student clubs and organizations, and by networking with a variety of regional leaders through Averett’s minor in Leadership Studies.”

Participants are required to pay a refundable fee of $50 that will be returned upon graduation from the program. Participants will be selected based on the quality of their applications. The program will be held primarily on Averett’s campus from June 11-16.

Applications are due by April 7 and can be completed here. The selection committee will identify participants by April 17. For more information or questions, contact Tia Yancey at [email protected] or call (434) 791-7214.
