Service Year Fellow – City of Danville

Service Year Fellow in partnership with the Center for Community Engagement at Averett University

Scope of work: A Service Year Fellow will serve 25 hours/week in the Park Services Division of Danville Parks and Recreation.  This is a 12-month program and the Fellow will report directly to the Parks and Recreation Facility and Services Planner. While serving the Fellow will concentrate on the following:

  •  Evaluate Parks and Recreation operations with the intent to build in increased environmental sustainability through events, processes, practices.
  •  Develop an environmental literacy program, especially for children, to be implemented through afterschool programs and summer camps, and perhaps in Danville Public Schools.
  •  Research and develop a public messaging and education campaign related to littering, recycling, etc.
  •  Research ways to develop the sustainability of this program through future funding (grant writing, etc.)

Responsibilities: Focus of service will be to assess, evaluate research and implement practices that reduce environmental impact and create a process for sustainability within the parks and recreation department operations. The examples of service include: evaluation of park maintenance operations to make them more environmentally friendly and sustainable; the development and implementation of practices that reduce environmental impact from large special events; the development of public messaging to reduce littering and promote recycling; and the development and teaching of environmental stewardship programs with children.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this fellowship will have a desire to serve the community, and a strong interest in learning and implementing programs and initiatives that directly address operational environmental sustainability through change of practice and education. Candidate must be able to work independently, do research, present research and apply knowledge directly to practice. Candidate should have a degree from a four-year college or university with coursework related to: Biology, Education, Environmental Science, Recreation or fields that relate to the environment or community planning.
