French Minor Program

Averett University offers proficiency-based modern languages programs in French and Spanish. For the minor in French, students explore the culture, history, and literature of France and French-speaking nations while developing speaking, conversation, and writing skills. This program can be taken as part of a bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages, or in any other major.

Courses in the French Minor

Students taking French as a minor study the following courses:

  • Beginning French I, II
  • Intermediate French I, II
  • Intermediate Spoken French
  • Conversation and Listening
  • Advanced Writing and Grammar
  • Introduction to French and Francophone Literature
  • French Civilization and Culture: Feudal Society through Absolute Monarchy
  • French Civilization and Culture: Revolution through the Fourth Republic
  • French Civilization and Culture: The Fifth Republic

These courses provide the basis for speech and writing proficiency in French, along with an understanding of the society in which the language developed.
