Meet Our Health and Sport Science Faculty

Prepare for a career as a coach, personal trainer, sports administration professional, or physical education teacher with Averett University. Our Bachelor’s degree program in Health and Sport Science offers the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need for success in a range of sports and health-related occupations.

Students earning a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Sport Science can choose from one of the following majors:

  • Health and Sport Science with concentrations in
    • Coaching
    • Health, Physical Education with teacher licensure PK-12
    • Personal Training
    • Physical Education – A non-teaching major for those looking to work with city recreation organizations, the YMCA, camps, and other non-school organizations
  • Sports Medicine with concentrations in
    • Wellness
    • Science (Helps prepare students for graduate programs in athletic training, occupational therapy and physical therapy)
  • Sports Administration

Courses in the Health and Sport Science Major

Courses for Physical Education majors vary depending upon their chosen area of emphasis, but a few courses are taught in common among nearly all of the majors:

  • First Aid and Safety
  • Physiology of Activity
  • Kinesiology
  • Sport Psychology
  • Motor Learning
  • Internship

Health & Sport Science Concentration Options

  • For the Coaching concentration, additional courses within the major cover coaching, training, and officiating skills, along with biomechanics and legal issues in sports.
  • Students preparing for teacher licensure in Health and Physical Education (K-12) take education courses, biology and anatomy, and other content area-related classes.
  • Personal Training students learn the skills necessary to improve physical fitness among a broad range of clients, from athletes to rehabilitative patients to older adults.
  • In the Physical Education (non-teaching) concentration, students do not prepare for teaching licensure, but rather for careers in recreation departments, the YMCA, and other organizations. Courses focus on teaching programming and instruction skills.

Sports Medicine Concentration Options

  • Students who choose the Wellness concentration focus on improving performance for athletes, including nutrition, injury prevention, therapeutic exercise, and more.
  • The Science concentration Helps prepare students for graduate programs in athletic training, occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Sports Administration Major

The Sport Administration concentration teaches business administration skills and knowledge along with an understanding of the business of sport—professional, scholastic, and intercollegiate.

Health and Sport Science Minors

Students who want to pursue coaching as an add-on to a teaching career or as a personal hobby can take one of our Health and Sport Science Minors, which teach primary knowledge of anatomy, physical activity, coaching and officiating.

The physical education non-teaching minor prepares students for careers in recreation departments, the YMCA, and other organizations.

Students who want to pursue Sports Administration as an add on to a business degree or as a personal hobby can take our Sports administration minor, which teaches business administration skills and an understanding of the business of sport—professional, scholastic, and intercollegiate.
