Officially Entering the Program

Once foundational coursework is complete, formal admission into the Educator Preparation Program includes two additional steps designed to assess your readiness to teach:

Reflective Essays: Three short written responses exploring your teaching style, your philosophy on student achievement, and your vision for shaping the social-cultural progression of education.
Interview: An in-person conversation with the Program Directors to evaluate your communication skills, professional demeanor, and alignment with the program’s values.

Together with a 3.0 GPA and a completed program application, these steps ensure every student begins their clinical training with clarity of purpose and professional preparedness.

Hands-On From Day 1

Teaching is learned by doing, and Averett makes sure you get plenty of practice well before your student teaching begins.

Through partnerships with local school divisions, you’ll progress from classroom observation to planning and delivering lessons, working with students across grade levels and developing classroom management skills, all with individualized mentoring from faculty and cooperating teachers. Completing 25 hours of field experience each semester means you’ll begin student teaching with well over 100 hours of classroom experience already in hand, and your comprehensive student teaching experience adds 300 more hours, fully preparing you for your first classroom.
